Personal Safety at Binghamton

"Together for a safe campus"

 

Personal safety and crime prevention have been priorities on this campus for many years.  We invite you to take a moment to review the following list of departments, programs and services offered at Binghamton University


NEW YORK STATE UNIVERSITY POLICE

Provides 24 hour routine and emergency police services seven days a week.  All officers are New York State Certified Police officers who have successfully completed all requirements of the title.  In an emergency dial X 911, or for non emergencies, dial X 7-2393.

OFFICE OF RESIDENTIAL LIFE

Each residential hall floor or house is staffed with a Resident Assistant.  Each residence hall building is staffed by a Resident Director.  These are live-in positions.

BLUE LIGHT EMERGENCY TELEPHONES

Sixty highly visible outdoor phones for emergency use are connected directly to the University Police Dispatcher.

SECURITY ACCESS TELEPHONES

Security access telephones are located outside the main entrance of each residence hall.  Guests, visitors, or delivery persons can call students to let them know they are waiting outside the hall. Residents are responsible for meeting such callers and escorting them while they are in the building.

ESCORT PROGRAM

On-campus escorts are available to all members of the University community each night during the academic year.  Officers will provide escort service at other times.  Escorts receive special training and carry radios for communication with the Police.  Call X7-2393 to arrange escort service.

STUDENT ESCORT VAN

An escort van is available to provide escort transportation via a predetermined route on campus.  Students may utilize the van by waiting for it along the escort van route, or by calling 777-SAFE

CAMPUS WATCH

This program, similar to the "Neighborhood Watch" operates in the residence halls.  The effectiveness of this initiative is determined by the willingness of all students to become active participants.

OPERATION I.D.

Personal property may be engraved and registered with the Police as an aid in identifying lost or stolen property.

OFFICER LIAISON

The University Police work with the staff and students of each residential college and community to promote understanding, and to foster adherence to effective crime prevention techniques.

PANIC BUTTONS

Key areas, including the women't locker room in both gymnasia are equipped with panic alarm buttons which permit direct, immediate communication with the police.

GATE GUARD PROGRAM

From 12 midnight until 5am, all gates to the campus are closed to vehicle traffic except the campus main entrance.  All vehicles admitted to campus during this time must display a current University parking decal, or the occupants of the vehicle must be hosted by a member of the University community.

RESIDENCE HALL ACCESS

All residence hall doors are locked on a 24 hour basis.

WOMEN'S PERSONAL SAFETY

In addition to scheduled programs on personal safety and women's personal safety, University Police conduct a for-credit course on Rape Aggression Defense (RAD)  Contact the University Police for more information.

EDUCATIONAL PROGRAMS

In addition to the above programs and services, many campus offices offer educational programs on issues including alcohol and other substance abuse, fire safety, other dimensions of personal safety and related topics.

JUDICIAL AFFAIRS OFFICE

This office protects all aspects of the "Rules of Student Conduct" and "Student Judicial Procedures" as listed in he "Rules and Expectations."  This includes advising students of their rights, protection guarantees, and responsibilities as members of the campus community.  Judicial Affairs is located on the third floor of the College in the Woods office building.  Phone 777-6210.
